Patent creation process

Idea

Every invention begins with an idea. Often these ideas come to us while we're working or at home, living our lives. For example, the Cirrus Wind Indicator or our Bak N Grill. At BNR, we find creative solutions to daily problems.

Research and development

Once we have discovered our problem, the first steps are to research what technologies are currently available, and what could be done to improve them. We spend time developing an idea that will revolutionise the way our problem is solved.

Prototype

After a period of research and product development, it's time to build out a prototype. This is when our solution becomes more than an idea on paper, it becomes a true representation of our end product. This prototype will determine what needs to be improved or changed before the product is ready for market.

Test unit

After several evolutions from prototype testing, the product is ready to be tested by consumers. This requires a more polished, finished version of the prototype called a Test Unit.

Patients (Medical)

In cases of medical equipment patent testing, patient studies are required. Test Units will go through several rounds of in-depth testing before finally moving on to human trials.

2023

Results

The results are tallied. For medical equipment, rounds of testing will have improved the device's efficacy. After successful human trials, the product is ready for patent status. For consumer products etc., the product may go through several evolutions from the Test Unit stage to increase its appeal to the consumer.

Patent pending

When the product is fully developed, it is ready for patent pending status. When a patent is pending, it means the developer has begun the process of applying for exclusive rights to use, sell, or license the product.

Patent Issued

Once the patent has been issued, no other developer or company may reproduce the technology. This can be on a country or worldwide level.
